Animal Behavior

It's a video of a human infant and a chimpanzee infant seemingly 'playing' through the glass at a zoo. To someone that hasn't studied animal behavior it is a cute exchange between two different species. In reality that chimp is practicing for so much more.

Below is what I originally commented on the video.

I've actually worked with chimps in a zoo where I learned a lot about primate behavior and that infant chimp isn't 'being nice' to that baby. It's actually practicing threat display...it's protecting his territory. It's not that he wants out he's just protecting his enclosure.
And it's not inhumane to keep animals in a captive setting. Certainly you are always going to have circumstances where animals are treated inhumanely however that looks like a VERY healthy little chimp. They actually have a rather luxurious life in captivity. They are protected from predators, disease and have a regular food and water available to them. Animals often live much longer in captive settings then they do in the wild. 
And lastly they are also serving the invaluable role of ambassadors to their species! How many of us will get a chance to actually travel to Africa and learn about chimps firsthand? About their behaviors? Their social interactions? The loss of their habitat? The threat of the overall survival of their wild conspecifics? Not too many of us...especially with todays economy! Ever the more the reason to bring all these amazing animals to us. To the visitors! So they can make special connections with those animals. Learn to love them.
Without captive animals we would have a lot less animals in this world. It gives us a chance to study behavior, how they function, how we can help bring their population numbers up. Help bring these animals back from the brink of extinction! Without captive animals we would no longer have gray wolves, red wolves, tigers, polar bears, panda bears, red pandas, snow leopards, cheetahs, sea turtles just to name a few...
Not my intention to offend anyone. Just wanted people to have the facts. :)

Trying a Blog

I've been told in the past that I should write a blog. I believe a friend said that I was good at conveying the truth without being offensive. Well I don't know about that but I certainly try. I'm sometimes a rather opinionated person that is often not afraid to share my opinion.

As I am in limbo between recently graduating college and trying to find a job... what else do I have to do?
